Health care systems across the country are grappling with a host of challenges that will dramatically impact their ability to deliver care in the future. As cost pressures continue to rise and reimbursements shrink, health care leaders struggle to think about where to place their bets (and their capital investments) on inpatient facilities, outpatient clinics, care for the aging, service lines, partnerships, medical devices and technology, information systems, and on and on. In the midst of coping with these challenges, an overdue focus on patient safety lifts up the challenge of collaboration across time and the many different clinicians who shape the patient's experience. No one can predict the future, but it is safe to say that decisions made today will profoundly impact health systems' ability to survive over time.
